If you live in Illinois it’s important to know how to search for unclaimed property. This article will go over the basics of unclaimed property — what it is and where you can go to search and file a claim for it. So keep reading below for more information.
Basics of Unclaimed Property
Unclaimed Property has several different forms, but basically it’s any intangible property or funds a company is in possession of, but has gone unused over a certain period of time. Things like checking and savings accounts, insurance checks, payroll checks, money orders, utility refunds, and more.
If there has been no activity with these types of funds over a period of around 3 years, the property is considered abandoned and is reported to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office. Now let’s take a look at how you can find it.
Finding Unclaimed Property
Enter your first and last name to begin your search. You can also use a business name to find unclaimed property. If you get too many results, reduce the number by entering in the city or town you live in. Once you’ve found property that belongs to you, hit the claim button and proceed with the claims process.
You will need to include information such as your current mailing address, and relationship to the owner of the unclaimed property. If you are the owner, you’ll be able to select that option. Otherwise, you will need to specify if you’re the ‘Heir’ or ‘Representative’. Once you have submitted the claim you will get a claim number to reference in the future.
Important Documents
You will need to provide some basic identification documents when submitting your request, so be sure to have a copy of your photo id and social security number. You will also get an email that tells you what specific documents you need for your claim.
Use the following address to submit your claim and any other additional forms:
Office of the Illinois State Treasurer
Unclaimed Property Division
P.O. Box 19495
Springfield, IL 62794-9495
Check the status of your claim by entering in the claim number from the email you receive.
Lost and Found
It’s easy to search for any unclaimed property you might be owed as an individual or business. Keep in mind that the state of Illinois will never take ownership of your unclaimed property, so be sure to look as soon as possible.
