These days, it’s more important than ever to have affordable internet access. As more people have the option of working from home, and schools devote more time to online teaching, home internet is crucial. This article will go over an important program that could help you save up to $30 per month on your internet bill.
Emergency Broadband Benefit
In 2021, the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) was formed as a temporary subsidy to help low-income families with their utility bills. But now in 2022, the EBB has been replaced by the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). This new program is part of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed by President Biden late last year.
This new program provides a discount of $30 a month to those who qualify and $75 per month for households on tribal lands. As of February 2022, there are already over 10 million households in the US that have signed up.
Participating Service Providers
There are many familiar names that have agreed to participate in the Affordable Connectivity Program: AT&T, Frontier, Google Fiber, Optimum, Spectrum, T-Mobile, Verizon, Xfinity, CenturyLink, and many more. Find what is available in your area by choosing your state.
How To Qualify
Because the ACP is designed to help low-income families afford a broadband connection for school, work, healthcare, and other services, at least one member of the household must meet the following requirements below.
If you or someone in your household is in the federal Lifeline program, you’ll be able to participate in the ACP. A bonus to this requirement is that through the Lifeline program, you can receive an additional $9 off per month on your internet bill.
There are a few other programs that if you or a household member are in will make you eligible for ACP: Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Federal Public Housing Assistance, and Supplemental Security Income for Women, Infants, and Children.
Additional Programs
There are a few other programs that will get you into the ACP:
- Tribal programs such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribal TANF, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
- Received a Pell Grant during the current award year
- Approved for a free or reduced-price school lunch program for all school years between 2019 and 2022
Stay Connected And Save
The ACP is a great way to save big on your monthly internet bill. So it’s a great idea to find out if you’re eligible to participate.
